JPRacing - Goodwood Day Two

Yesterday was an absolute minefield - luckily Kinross won for most of Racing Twitter or we’d be losing our shit completely. You know by now that we go again today though and hopefully, Goodwood is more glorious to us than yesterday — even if the weather is set to make it a complete bog.

Other racing is available at Redcar, Perth, Galway, Sandown and Leicester…

Headlines

Jim Crowley has been hit with a 20-day ban and a £10k fine for overuse of the whip on Hakum in the King George on Saturday. He’ll now miss the ride on Juddmonte second fav Mostahdaf at York later this month.

Tom Marquand and Quickthorn produced one of the craziest victories ever seen in the Goodwood Cup yesterday. They were 25 lengths clear at the halfway stage and no one could reign them in. Embarrassing for the rest of the field.

Frankie produced the perfect ride to win the Group 2 Lennox Stakes on Kinross.

Glorious Goodwood Day Two

Not a lot of success for this section yesterday and today looks like it’s going to be very much the same as the weather turns to heavy rain and thunderstorms. There are some horses who are going to like this soft ground though.

Amleto, the 2/1 fav for the opener, won comfortably on soft ground at Chester lto in May. He’s a brother to G1 winner Sea Of Class and his mare Holy Moon won on heavy. William Haggas’ son of Sea The Starts could be worth siding with under Marquand.

Fast Response, 5/1 G3 Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes, is also a specialist on this ground with four of her six wins on soft/heavy and Karl Burke has indicated that conditions are suited. She’s 11/8 to place (3 places).

£135,000 April purchase Tropical Island (5/2 for 16:10) won on soft ground for Richard Fahey 11 days ago and my favourite horse at the minute Paddington should have no issues in the feature (albeit not backable at his price), but my NAP goes to La Isla Mujeres at 9/4 in the 16:45.

She’s shown huge improvement in her four races to date and is going for the hat-trick today. She won by seven lengths over this distance on soft ground last month and is up 7lb as result, but she still has solid claims here. Ralph Beckett is a man in form and he’s won this three of the last four time.

One to watch

There are plenty of 2YO races today, but the one that makes the one to watch is Classy Boy (6/5) in the 2:00 at Redcar. He was third at Doncaster lto, but the penny seemed to drop in the closing stages as he ran on well in the final 110 yards. If he can build on that, this colt can get off the mark for Burke.

Eastern Charm (11/8) is a horse I have napped a couple of times in the past and she continues to progress this season. She picked up a third win from four starts this season on the AW lto and is going for the hat-trick as she returns to the turf in the 20:32 at Sandown. There should be further progress for this Haggas horse and Adam Farragher more or less cancels out her rise.

The other one I’m backing today is Kilcruit to win the Galway Plate at 11/2. It’s a very competitive renewal of the race, but the Willie Mullins runner won his handicap debut by 15 lengths at Punchestown in April, and his most recent outing over hurdles and a trip of 3m1f and be forgiven in these circumstances. He’s back over fences today and a big run is expected under Paul Townend.
