JPRacing - Goodwood Day Four
Yesterday must have been a much better day for the punters at Goodwood. Vandeek was mentioned in the newsletter and he won very nicely at 11/8, while other favourites Novus, Ornellaia and Jm Jungle all romped home to hopefully wipe the smile off the bookies’ faces.
Sweet Fantasy also hosed home under Rossa Ryan in the last at Epsom for a newsletter exclusive victory, but the best winner of the day was Zarak The Brave’s success at 9/2 in the Galway Hurdle. A very, very nice winner for the newsletter at that price and after the week we had to that point.
The Goodwood and Galway Festivals both continue today, but there’s shit loads of racing with meetings also at Bangor, Wolverhampton, Newmarket, Mussleburgh and Bath.
Headlines
Desert Hero is now a 6/1 shot for the St Leger after Tom Marquand made it back-to-back victories aboard the Royal runner in the Gordon Stakes. It was another masterclass from Tom on the Sussex Downs after his ride on Quickthorn in the Goodwood Cup.
Al Husn stunned French raider Blue Rose Cen and Nashwa to win the G1 Nassau Stakes yesterday. It was the second big win in the Shadwell colour for Jim Crowley after his King George success and he got a bit of help from Ryan Moore as he slammed the door in the face of Blue Rose Cen as she tried to sneak up the inside.
The Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Sunday is shaping up nicely. The market is led almost entirely by British and Irish runners, with Art Power the favourite at 7/2, followed by Little Big Bear (4/1) and a couple of runners each for Karl Burke and Charlie Hills.
Goodwood Day Four
There are a good few odds-on horses at Goodwood this afternoon, but surely one of them will be turned over and the one I’m opposing is Hamish. Yes, he’s got plenty going for him. There’s cut in the ground, he’s 2-2 this season and Tom Marquand is riding out of his skin this week.
However, this drop back to 1m4f could be too short for him and Epsom is a speedy track. Therefore, I’d fancy taking him on with Frankie’s mount Mimikyu (9/2). She’s a very good filly on her day, proving that with a G2 success last year, and today’s distance could be right her street.
That’s all I’ll be playing at Goodwood today.
One to watch
Kandoo catches the eye on debut for Archie Watson’s yard. She’s been absolutely hammered into 11/10 from as far out as 9/4 for the 18:30 at Bath. She was third on her last two appearances for Jack Davison in Ireland but had solid claims in this Maiden. Mini Magna is the obvious danger at 10/3 after showing good improvement to come second by just a head lto.
The other selection is one who has featured before — Bazball at 5/4 in the 18:45 at Mussleburgh. He got off the mark emphatically when he was last tipped at Bath two weeks ago and can improve further again tonight despite a 7lb rise.

Newsletter exclusive tips
The first exclusive is a horse who ran just last night at Newcastle. Mostallim got off the mark for the season at Chelmsford last week and looked to follow that up yesterday evening, but was a BF when faring no better than third. He’s 2-2 over C&D at Wolverhampton though and is 13/8 to win the 16:20.
The next both come from Galway. Captain Maverick (2/1) defied a bit of greenness to claim a decent second from 28/1 on debut at Bellewstown around a month ago and the Dermot Weld horse is in with a chance again if he improves on that in the 17:30. Cheek pieces are applied and they rarely go amiss when Weld get those out.
The other Ivana for Willie Mullins at 2/1 in the 19:10. She won a bumper by a comfortable margin on her only other appearance at Limerick back in May and she’s being tasked in a Fillies Maiden on the flat today. There’s reason to believe the mare can follow up debut win with another victory. Seamie Heffernan rides for Mullins.
