JPRacing - Goodwood Day Three

Paddington is an absolute superstar, but the Goodwood minefield continued yesterday and I lost another limp by stepping on another few bombs. Today looks much more favourable to the punter, but those are often famous last words.

Goodwood and Galway continue today, while there’s also meetings at Stratford, Nottingham, Epsom and Newcastle…

Headlines

As already mentioned, Paddington sensational form continued with a thrilling win in the Sussex Stakes. That was his seventh win in a row and his fourth-straight Group 1. He’s currently available at 2/1 for the Juddmonte and I’d recommend taking that as if he goes there next, he won’t be anywhere near that.

The win on Paddington was also Ryan Moore’s 11th Group 1 win of the season

Sticking with Ballydoyle, Little Big Bear has been supplemented for the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Sunday as heavy ground is expected. Ryan Moore will ride.

Dane O’Neill, Shadwell’s No.2 rider, will miss the rest of the flat season after suffering a fractured thoracic vertebra and broken ribs in that horror fall at Wolverhampton last month. Shadwell will now be without their first and second jockey for Mostahdaf’s Juddmonte bid.

Goodwood Day Three

I’ve had a stinker at Goodwood this week. The Bookies are mocking it, but I’m praying things will change today.

Money is coming for Ryan Moore’s ride aboard Sir Michael Stoute’s Perfuse in the opener. He went off as the favourite at Royal Ascot last month but could fare no better than fifth as he weakened towards the end of the fast-paced race.

He drops back to 1m2f, winning over this distance in a much lower class at Nottingham in May. There’s still plenty of appeal in him though and the softer ground will suit.

Vandeek is another one being heavily backed this morning. He won on debut over this distance (6f) at Nottingham last month. The ground was good to soft that day, so he should be able to cope with this on the softer side and he looks open to further improvement.

It would be some day for the punters if the market leaders win the first three races, that is unlikely but I’ve napped Espionage as I think he’s got a great chance in this G3 given the ground. He has drifted to 2/1 since I posted about him last night as well.

Blue Rose Cen has been hammered into odds-on for the feature race the Nassau Stakes at 15:35, but I’m opposing her with Nashwa. The Gosden filly has more appeal at 5/2 and won this race last year, while she looked back to her best when winning the Falmouth last month. This is a step back up in trip, but she has it in her and the ground will suit.

Newsletter exclusive tips

The first exclusive today is Zarak The Brave (4/1) in the Galway Hurdle for Paul Townend and Willie Mullins. The Double Green horse had a good juvenile season over hurdles last term, winning by 10 lengths on debut before coming home second behind stablemate Lossiemouth on two occasions. He was third in a Grade 1 out in France lto and he looks more than capable today as he could turn out to be a fantastic hurdler.

The next tip is also from the world of jumps, this time from Stratford where I’m backing Tiger Orchid to win the opener at 6/4. He’s won two of his last three attempts over fences, including a six-length victory at Worcester last week, and he can defy his 7lb penalty to strike again today.

A horse on the drift also caught my eye. Sweet Fantasy was 4/5 but has gone out to 6/5. She won comfortably under Rossa Ryan for Ralph Beckett at Leicester just last week and looks capable of following that up in the same conditions (soft) at Epsom tonight despite a 5lb penalty.
