JPRacing - Saturday Special

It’s the first Saturday of the New Year, and despite Sandown being abandoned, there’s still plenty of racing today.

Wincanton survived an inspection, which is good news for those planning to sit on the sofa and watch ITV Racing, while there are also jumps at Newcastle (also on ITV) and Cork this afternoon. Kempton and Southwell are this evening’s AW meetings.

Yesterday’s selections would have been good for a place pot, as Gronzi, Malaita, Haut Folin and Jackson Street were all in the top three, while Saint Davy won in the telegram.

It’s frustrating to have three seconds and a third though, so hopefully we can have a bit more luck with this afternoon’s selections.

Let’s get on with it then…

Feach Amach needed a couple of runs to used to life over obstacles after switching from racing on the flat in Ireland under Jim Bolger to Nigel Fawke, but she got off the mark on the third attempt at Sedgefield in November from 33/1 and looks capable of further improvement on her handicap debut at 4/1 in the 14:05 at Wincanton. The 4YO allowance could prove useful as well, and she’s unexposed.

Charlie Deutsch rides today’s NAP, and he could have another good chance on Intimate at 15/4 in the 15:15. He had a wind op after finishing second twice in his first two races for Williams, and he’s improved this season with a second at Fontwell while he was beaten by less than a length in third at Uttoxeter before Christmas. The opening mark for handicap debut looks workable and should be in with a good chance.

Teescomponentstrig has only been seen four times since his C&D win here in January 2020, but he loves these testing conditions and the 9YO looked good when only beaten by a neck on heavy ground at Hexham in December. Looks in with a chance with Brian Hughes on board at 3/1.

Goodoldbill was pulled on his chase debut at Kelso in October but ended up winning at Newcastle from 33/1 in November. He’s dropped in trip for the 14:50 this afternoon, but that shouldn’t be much of an inconvenience and neither should the 3lb rise he faces for that success. He’s also 3/1.

At Cork, Paggane makes her second appearance for Willie Mullins in the 12:12. She won over 1m5f on the flat in France, but could fare no better than fifth on her debut over hurdles at Navan in November as she didn’t jump fluently. She should be much better than her first showing with that experience and is 2/1 second favourite behind Will Wilde.

In the next at Cork, Flamborough is the short-priced favourite. But I like the look of Striking, and the Jessica Harrington-trained horse is getting decent support as he’s into 5/1 from 7s. He was some way back in a competitive handicap at Leopardstown on Boxing Day but has previously proven to be a useful hurdler and it would be no surprise to see him back in the mix with Jack Kennedy on board.

I might post some Kempton and Southwell selections on X later, as I want to keep an eye on the markets due to it still being very early. So keep an eye out for those.
