JPRacing - Frankie calls of retirement

Kicking things off today with the inevitable news that Frankie Dettori has poured cold water on his retirement plans. He has told the Racing Post that he plans to ride full-time out of Santa Anita Park in California, where he spent last winter. There’s no doubt we will see him back in the UK and Europe for the big meetings though.

Just the one winner from yesterday’s three runners, and it was newsletter favourite Police Academy — who made it three wins from four runs for Fergal O’Brien. Full faith is in the Gloucestershire-based trainer again today as he saddles the NAP (see below).

Moving on to today. There are three flat and three jumps cards. The three flat meetings are at the Curragh, Ayr and Chelmsford and the three cards over obstacles are at Exeter, Worcester and Tramore.

It is a truly awful day out there today though, so go easy with your punting because it could be a complete bog in place — especially at Ayr where the going is heavy.

Ones to watch

There are only four juvenile races across the cards today, with two at the Curragh and the other two at Ayr and Chelmsford.

The two at the Curragh are intriguing. The opener at 13:15 is led by newcomers Porters Place and Ballydoyle’s Everlasting. However, they are both going in opposite directions in the market, with the former shortening up to 6/4 while O’Brien’s charge has drifted out to 3/1.

I think there’s a chance one of the runners with a bit of experience can prove a thorn in the side though, and my preference is with Wendla at 9/2. The Juddmonte filly was only beaten by a length from the same odds on debut at Cork on soft ground last month. Today’s drop in trip to 7f from a mile and proof that she handles the ground could put her in good stead today.

Another of Aidan’s horses who is on the drift at the Curragh this morning is Psalm, who is out to 3/1 in the maiden at 13:50. The 300,000gns purchase out of Sea The Stars has plenty of promise and holds G1 entry in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. But he has a bit to prove after faring no better than fourth on debut at Newmarket about two weeks ago. But improvement should be on the cards today and if so, he might be able to get the better of favourite Kortez Bay at 3/1.

Peace Walk was last of 14 runners on debut on good ground at York in August when sent off at 29/1, but he loved the slower conditions when winning on soft ground at Beverley from 7/1 last month and there’s every chance the Charlie Johnson-trained horse can go just as well on heavy in the 14:45 at Ayr. He’s no better than even money, however.

The Waiting Game is looking for her five-timer at Chelmsford this evening, and an eight lb rise still might not be enough to stop the Jack Jones-trained horse from winning for the fourth time over C&D from 11/4 in the 18:30. David Probert has been in the saddle for two of her four successes and he returns this evening.

Newmill Getaway is making her hurdle debut in the 15:25 at Exeter (7/4) and she poses some nice form in bumpers, finishing third, first and second in her last three attempts. She was beaten by just a head lto and can make a winning start in this sphere.
