JPRacing - We Back 👊

There was no newsletter yesterday as there just weren’t enough fancies for me across the cards. The NAP Ayr Poet was the only one I liked the look of enough to make sure I posted something, and he was ultimately beaten by half-a-length. So a pretty crap day overall.

When racing is building up to something big, it often means there is underwhelming cards beforehand and that feels like what we are going through now as the King George, Glorious Goodwood and the Galway Festival are all on the horizon.

There are five meetings today, with jumps at Southwell and Ballinrobe and flat at Musselburgh, Wolverhampton and Chelmsford.

Headlines

The King George is shaping up to potentially be a race of the year contender, with dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin, King Of Steel and Emily Upjohn still amongst the 15 entries at this stage.

Sean Levey has been cleared of taking any prohibited substances by the BHA. The jockey returned a ‘non-negative’ test at Sandown last year, but it was followed with a negative test lab test and it’s taken this long to confirm his innocence.

Ocean Wind returned from a mammoth 771-day absence with a third-place finish in the Listed Coral Marathon at Sandown last month and the seven-year-old is now on track for a first Group 1 attempt in the Goodwood Cup.

The Racing League returns at Yarmouth on Thursday night. There’s not much to separate the favourites for the top team award, with Wales and the West more or less neck-and-neck with Frankie Dettori’s team — the East.

One to watch

There’s just the one juvenile today, and it’s Macanudo (2/1) in the 18:50 at Chelmsford. The Amo horse is yet to get off the mark on his first three attempts, but he’s knocking on the door with two seconds since finishing fourth on debut and he was just a length back lto. He returns to 6f today and he should be able to deal with the Chelmsford AW track under William Buick.

Newsletter exclusive tips

The first exclusive is River Of Joy at 2/1 in the 15:55 at Southwell. She got off the mark when winning a Novices’ Hurdle by two lengths over two miles at Ffos Las last month. This is a big step up to 2m4.5f, but she should stay the trip and in-form Sean Bowen rides.

The second pick is Show Compassion in the 20:30 at Wolverhampton. She struck for the first time over 6f at this course a fortnight ago and connection’s said that she appreciated the return to the all-weather. She’s up 4lb, but still looks well handicapped and is a leading contender over this shorter trip of 5f.
