JPRacing - July Festival Eve

This week feels like it has been building up to the July Festival at Newmarket and we are just one day out from the action now. That’s a matter for tomorrow though, as there’s plenty of action still taking place across the UK and Ireland today.

Yarmouth, Catterick, Kempton, Bath, Lingfield, Dundalk and Fairyhouse are what we have to look forward to throughout the course of today, with the first race of the afternoon the 13:45 at Yarmouth and the last the 21:00 at Kempton.

Yesterday wasn’t a total write-off. The NAP run ended, but Keep Warm was mentioned at 4/1 for the opener at Pontefract and Zoffany Bay won the Tranmore Derby to ensure the exclusive tips kept ticking over — that’s what you come here for, after all.

Let’s get on with today’s newsletter.

Headlines

The opening race at Wolverhampton was voided yesterday after Dane O’Neill was unseated at the start and needed to be stretchered off the track and taken to hospital. Thankfully, he is conscious but has fractured his thoracic vertebrae and several ribs.

19 have been declared at this stage for the King George at Ascot later this month, most notably Derby 1-2 Auguste Rodin and King Of Steel.

William Buick has picked up two Group 1 rides at Newmarket as he will replace the suspended Frankie Dettori in the saddle of Kinross in the July Cup and Prosperous Voyage in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes.

The Gosdens have had to deny that Kieran Shoemark is going to be their next stable jockey when Frankie retires as the Irish rider was booked to ride Soul Sister in the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp on Friday. Shoemark has ridden four winners in 21 rides for Clarehaven this season.

Paddington is absolutely flying up the Global Horse Rankings after his victory in the Eclipse last weekend. The Aidan O’Brien horse is up to fourth in the world in the latest standings.

Ones to watch

Unlike yesterday, there is plenty of young blood action today — with two 2YO races at both Catterick and Lingfield, and others at Fairyhouse and Kempton. A 2YO is actually today’s Twitter NAP, with Works Of Arts running in the Fillies’ Novice Stakes at Kempton. See more on that below.

I have a few more ones to watch this afternoon/this evening. Those who have followed me for long enough know how big of an O’Brien fan I am and The Caribbean (7/4) is one I have followed on both his runs thus far.

He was beaten at odds-on over C&D here last month, but he didn’t disgrace himself in second at all. He’s blinkered the first today and claimer Killian Hennessy takes the ride. I think he’s worth another go.

Whoop Whoop (11/10) is another 2YO who could get off the mark today in the 14:50 at Yarmouth. She was fourth twice before being closely beaten by Mauna Loa last time out. The Ralph Beckett filly didn’t quite see out the 6f that day and she can win under Rossa Ryan in this reduced trip down to 5f today.

I’m going all out with a third juvenile selection today. Tenhotfourcrazy was second by just a short head to Invincible Tiger at Bath as she ran better than her 8/1 odds suggested lto. That should make her the leading contender in this maiden at Catterick (14:40), but Make It Easy is still feared.

Newsletter exclusive tips

The first newsletter tip today is Skallywag Bay at 15/8 in the 17:40 at Lingfield. She dropped to 5f two runs ago and has come on well from that, winning on the AW here last month before finishing a close second at Windsor lto. The Richard Hannon horse is up in class today but can still run a good race.

My other pick comes from the 18:50 Group 3 Brownstown Stakes at Fairyhouse. Zarinsk (6/5) has the best form in the race with a G3 victory at Leopardstown on soft to heavy ground in May and she was fourth in a G2 at Chantilly lto. The going is currently good at Fairyhouse, but there are showers in the forecast and the more downfall between now and the race the better.
