JPRacing - Rescheduled Lawlor's

There was no newsletter again yesterday, but there was a winning NAP (The Gay Blade) posted late in the day. He won again comfortably while still 5lb well in, but his hat-trick attempt is surely going to be more of a challenge when that comes around.

Today looks like a good day of racing for a change too, with the rescheduled Lawlor’s card at Naas set to kick us off at 12:42 — which Mister Policeman should win.

There are also jumps at Wincanton, Huntingdon, and Sedgefield, and AW at Dundalk and Wolverhampton. So, let’s get on with it then…

Where better than to kick things off than with the Lawlor’s? It’s the first Grade 1 of the year and has produced some good horses historically. This year, it appears to all be about Ile Atlantique and Firefox — and there is little to separate the pair in the betting at 7/4 and 15/8. Firefox did beat the Mullins horse in a bumper at Fairyhouse in April, but I do believe Ile Atlantique has what it takes to reverse that form this afternoon.

Firefox beat Ballyburn by over two lengths at Fairyhouse last month, but it wasn’t as impressive as it might look on paper. Ile Atlantique’s win at Gowran Park in November was more impressive. He beat Diamboy Des Carres by 19 lengths, who was a closer second to Mullins’ Westport Cove next time out, while No Time To Wait, who was 40 lengths behind in third, has won since.

I think there is more improvement to come from him, and I believe he is the faster of the two as well. It will be interesting to see how it pans out over this longer trip this afternoon.

Blue Beach’s sole win over hurdles came at Huntingdon last February and she appears to have a good chance of scoring again here, but this time over fences in the last at 15/8. The Mel Rowley-trained horse made a good account of herself on chasing debut when third at Exeter, and that should set her up nicely for her handicap debut and the step up in trip.

Plenty of market support has arrived for Centreofattention in the bumper at Wincanton, as the Nicky Henderson debutant has been smashed into 6/4 and surpassed Rickety Bridge at the fore. The Choeur Du Nord gelding cost £65k and his dam won over hurdles in France on her only start. The market could be very telling here, and that has made him very difficult to oppose.
