JPRacing - Midweek Jumps

Two winners yesterday as the NAP Wodhooh won the opener at Punchestown by an impressive 24 lengths for Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy, while Sprint Soprano got off the mark for Ralph Beckett on the second attempt at Southwell — winning by three-quarters of a length.

We really are starting to edge toward the start of the jumps racing campaign now and that sphere outweighs the flat today as there are meetings at Ludlow and Sedgefield as well as the second day of the seasonal opener at Punchestown.

It’s not all doom and gloom if you prefer the flat, however, there are cards at Nottingham and Kempton.

Ones to watch

Two ones to watch today, one at Nottingham and one at Kempton, and they are both from powerful yards.

First up is Midair (15/8) in the 15:12 at Nottingham. Beckett’s Going The Distance is a LTO winner after striking in the Marc Chan colours at Ffos Las, but he has to concede 6lb to the Harry & Roger Charlton-trained Juddmonte juvenile and he looks like the one to beat after showing stark improvement when second at Goodwood last month.

The other is in the Godolphin blue and is Age Of Baroque (11/8) in the 16:52 at Kempton. He was third over today’s C&D on his debut last month and any improvement on that should see him open his account for Charlie Appleby on the second time of asking.

Police Academy is a horse that has featured in the past. She’s been in incredible form since switching from Oliver Sherwood to Fergal O’Brien, winning at Uttoxeter and Bangor before being denied on the hat-trick attempt at Worcester lto. Hedera Park looks the main danger today and there is money coming for her in the market, but Police Academy should be able to make it three wins from 4 for O’Brien at 7/4 in the 16:30 at Ludlow.
